Community Centre and open space design

Community Centre

This section of the site is called the Community Centre as although it has commercial uses its primary benefit is for the local community. One of the issues raised by the local community is the need for a supermarket, however, instead of adding a single shop we decided to add a multiplex that provides employment for skilled and non-skilled workers whilst providing a place of recreation for those living locally. A plan to connect with the council so those who are in need of support to find employment can seek help which improves socially inclusivity. The multiplex itself will be privately funded but with a relationship with community organisation so a mutually beneficial asset is provided.

Site Access

Access to the commercial and open space section of the site promotes sustainable transport. The water front pathway promotes walkability from the residential section of the site, as well as the bridge that connects the two sides of the site together resulting in no longer than a 10 minute walk. The water front pathway and the bridge both provide enough space for pedestrians and cyclists reducing the need for cars and other modes of transport. Furthermore, as shown on the bottom left of the image there is a bus stop which allows those who are travelling from further away to access the site just as easily with the range of buses connecting the surrounding area. Service space for the commercial building is provided behind.

Sustainability and post Covid design

Promoting sustainability was a key focus within this area of the site due to it being a highly used part of the site. Provision for cycle parking is dispersed around the open space to encourage cycling for locals. The site also has bus stops to promote sustainable travel and a limited amount of parking is available and largely limited for disabled access and employees of the multiplex. In addition the large open spaces provide plenty of outdoor space for the apartments that don't have a garden, this promotes a healthy lifestyle and improves the sense of place. The green space contains an outdoor gym and a football field which creates a great place for local residents to exercise and socialise. The open space responds to a life with Covid-19 as people who don't have gardens have a place they can go to exercise which is enjoyable to be.
