Past Plans

LDDC Peoples Plan -
In 1984 residents from the docklands and surrounding areas bound together under the LDDC and proposed an alternative plan for their area, which had the primary objective of combatting the proposition for the London City Airports development and instead favored a community led plan which was centralized around the needs and aspirations of the area's residents.

The pushback against the building of the airport is significant as it highlighted the need for community engagement in developments and its popularity posed a real threat to developers which begun a trend in more sympathetic developments across the country in order to avoid similar pushback from the public.

Though it was not successful, it did encapsulate the wants and needs of the dockland residents, highlighting the issues which the areas faced at the time with an unemployment crisis under Thatcher and the complete closure of the docks in 1981.

The 2016 London Plan

The 2016 version of the London Plan involves a heavy focus on 'meeting housing demand' after the Olympics had occurred and that the Mayor and corresponding boroughs should 'ensure new developments contribute to the delivery of new transport’.

They also make clear there should be a focus on 'business space as well as  physical and social infrastructure'. This shows the demand for housing resulting in the crisis has not happened overnight and you could perceive that it could've been combatted at an earlier date, directly corresponding with current issues
