I was tasked with the development of the southern side of the Millennium Mills site in which has been developed into a residential area with a range of terrace housing, blocks of flats and a student accommodation. Additionally there is a open space north of the residential area which will have a meanwhile use as a. market in Newham. Although you could argue this section of the site is not as diverse as other factors, it offers a solution to the housing crisis in Newham.

As shown above, the student accommodation in the area will be to the west of the multiplex due to the fact the multiplex will offer a large level of employment as a result of the shops within. Although not shown in the picture, there will be 4 floors, each at a height of 5m. As well as this there is a private courtyard in the centre of the building in order to create an outdoor private space for the residents. This will create roughly 64 flats which will be hugely beneficial for the new opened East London University. Additionally, in the most southern section of the site is the blocks of flats which will follow a similar design. They consist of a private public garden infront of the building in order to divide the public and private sector of the site.

The figure shows the blocks of flats we aim to implement in a north facing view. From here you can oversee the Thames as well as the green area which will be implemented behind the Mills. The image really justifies the divide of public and private sectors of the site for the residents. Behind these buildings will be a similar design in order to combat the housing crisis in Newham as well as to follow the idea of backs facing backs to increase vitality. All flat blocks will follow this design of slow decreasing in height.

Progressing on from the idea of backs facing backs, the terrace housing runs west from the blocks of flats with both front and back gardens in order to create a sense of privacy fro the residents. Additionally, the houses are at a stagger in order to reduce the chance of people seeing into each others houses.

Lastly, you can see that access will be for both vehicles and pedestrians via a shared areas road whereby the people who are walking will take priority in order to create a more sustainable as well as safe area fro the people who live there. The main access point will be from the western road or by moving round to the beginning of the southern road via walking, cycling or driving.

Lastly, this photo shows the development from the south wester corner which shows the shit in a wider context. You can see the meanwhile use of the market behind the terrace housing as well as the access point to the housing from the western side. Lastly you cans see how the redeveloped site will integrate with the heritage of the site represented by Silo D.
